So yes, I remember back in the day when there were like 4 of us Those were the days... and some of the epic moments, such as David's topic on why we shouldn';t have engagement rings I wonder what Nicole and Will are posting IDK but I think it might have something to do with Pandas |

Well, since we're talking on Skype at the moment and you told me to, I'll return from the archives. I've pretty much been doing my whole being me gig, kept up with most of my friends on here through email, Skype and Facebook. I've pretty much moved south, I'm now down at Baylor University studying Electrical Engineering. That's about the sum of it... I mean, other than talking about all the random audio gear and guitars I've collected in the last few years. Yes, I'm still a nerd. And I know I'm supposed to get the panda joke, but I've totally spaced. It must be the coffee.... |

but yeah, for us ones who are busier, maybe we should have a miscelanous topic just for random talk, and the actual topics on subjects should strictly be on the subjects? (and for me, who goes off topic is would be a challenge... haha) idk just cuz we dont have hours and hours to answer every single post, and alot of people have stopped coming on (I wont mention names) because there's so much.... stuff, it's hard to find the things people "need" answers for...? idk, did that even make sense? |

I didn't join in 2008...but in April 2009, but there were hardly any people on here then! I remember quite well David's topic on engagement rings, I think I sided with him too. At least at times. I didn't answer for a long time cuz I couldn't figure out how to reply (you sign in, duh) he had quite a few interesting topics. Yeah Will, thinkin' you're so cool with all those girls...with perfect noses!! I'll never forgive you for that I think everyone knows what's gone on in my life. wow when I joined I was still homeschooling, the last 2 years I've been a part time live in care giver, now I have to be a ..full time wife. gulp! It really would be cool if some of you, Jo, Will, Nicole, Levi could come to our wedding. Sorry Darci not trying to offend anyone! Those ones just happen to be the ones I keep in contact with. (one guy asked if he talked to me enough if he'd get invited. the nerve!!!) |

Rose: Yeah… one of us should hunt David and Locke down. I miss having time to be on here. Darcie: Though I can't speak for Jo specifically, I think I might be able to help explain where her comments come from. (I'll get to why I might towards the end.) First, I would encourage you to read all of this, and to not be quick to take offense, as I'm aware there a few points where it could come across as implying you're immature or something like that. There are some of us who have been around these forums since there were about two threads in each topic. There are two things that naturally result from being the pioneers of the forums... with a few exceptions, most of us are pretty good friends, and keep up mostly outside of the forums. So you're right, there is a bit of camaraderie among us, and we're very fond of each other. That's just a given any time you join a social circle. The other thing that happens is that to some extent, there is an expected but unspoken etiquette to the forums, which keeps topics in fairly good order. Newer members don't necessarily know or follow that etiquette, and it annoys those of us who try to. For instance, it was somewhat unspoken that before starting a new thread, you would check back a ways and see if someone else had already talked about that subject. Granted, this works great as long as you have under ten pages of threads to go through, and gets clumsier as the forum grows. Now, usually, it seems like people just start threads without doing quite as much searching. But once you've had the same discussion 5 times, when someone tries to start it the 6th time, you get a little annoyed with it. Another thing is that posting was a lot slower, more deliberate, and weightier. If you look back to posts by David, Locke, emilyyyjanelle, Jo, Nicole and myself (And others, like Clare and Grant and I don't remember all the others) you'll find a lot of rather long, deep posts that don't seem to be popular on the forums now. Over half the time, I would actually compose my posts... literally, open it up in Word, save it, sleep on it or do homework, come back to it, and then post it. (I just switched to Mac, and I actually composed this post in Textedit.) The short, rapid-fire posts that seem to dominate the forum now are, by the way the forum used to operate, something along the lines of rude because of the amount of thought we poured into our posts. I don't know how well known I am around here anymore, but like Rose said, Nicole, Jo and I have been around here since life was sparked into the forums. (Yeah, there are others too, it wasn't just us three, but we were around all the time.) And yes, we had disagreements, but they were civil compared to what might be playful name-calling and joking that's going on now. I actually got back on here because Julie asked if I'd been on in a while, and I hadn't been, and she gave me a cursory overview of some of the stuff she's either had to shut down/delete/lock. Frankly, I totally understand Jo's frustration with the relative chaos and immaturity of the forums compared to what it was when it first bloomed. It seems like people are a lot quicker to give and take offense than they used to be, which doesn't help someone trying to not be annoyed. That, I think, is what you're picking up as unwelcoming/downing the newer people. Oh, a couple other things that don't really fit in to that paragraph: - We generally avoided emoticons in the titles of threads, because they always look weird and mess up the title. - As you might have gathered, Jo and I both over time earned the respect of Julie, so yes, we do talk to her and she talks to us. That's where Jo's suggestion for a new area for random discussion came from. It's actually not a new idea, but, if I remember correctly, that's actually up to the guys in the web development department, or Julie would have added it a while ago. Clare: Wow… I'd been on here about a year by then. I thought you joined before that. I sided with David some of the time… that said, he was usually a pretty good person to debate with. He did have some very interesting topics. Did I seriously say that? Wow. You'd better forgive me… or I might not be able to come to your wedding. :-P |

Clare, you didn't offend me at all. Actually, you're one of my favorite people on here! Thanks for explaining, Will. I actually get what you're saying, and found it helpful. What you said was true about what had hurt my feelings a bit, in addition to the way Jo seemed to be making such a big deal about the originals being *so cool*. I do think it's cool that y'all have been on here for so long, though! I don't have any hard feelings, and I have to admit that I've been a little jumpier than usual around here, due to some of the posts; one of the guys and I got into an argument with another guy, but now that it's over, I've calmed down some! This is the first forum I've ever been a part of, and after the argument, I've learned to be a bit more careful with teasing! I also think that the emoticon-ized titles are annoying, and I understand your frustration with the random, unrelated posts/ multiple posts. I think Beckah and I are partially responsible for the random posts; I'd be happy to move those random moments (which, I'm sure will include lots of meaningful discussion as well!) to emails, to help keep the forums "cleaner". I think that I may be one of three or four people who have taken your guys' previous spots of being the ones always available to help. Whenever I give advice on here, I like to think things out before "speaking", just like what you mentioned. For example, I had to chew on one of Rose's questions for a few hours before answering. Oh, I also happen to have my own "circle" on here, and I now see that Jo didn't mean to hurt anyone. I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions so quickly, and I hope I can earn Julie's respect, and your guys' too. |

Rose! Hey! Haha I haven't heard from you in a while on these forums- though I strongly suspect that's mostly due to my part Oh haha I do remember when I would be on these forums like 3 times a day! I always looked forward to the advice by David, Jo, Locke, and Will (wjr1991) I remember agreeing a lot with what they said, though at times, I think I disagreed with David a little bit. I always agreed with Jo though SO1: HAHA You probably don't. It's kind of an inside joke/ me being crazy You work at Panera? Where? I love that place! I don't think I have you as a friend on FB or anything though. I think I remember seeing you a while back- but it's been a while for me too. Clarissa: I remember that topic on engagement rings! Oh that was pretty awesome! I'm not sure whether or not I sided with him or not- or actually I think I maybe did, or at least knew where he was coming from I miss seeing him on these forums I would LOVE to come to your wedding Claire! Give me a date, time, and place, and we'll see what I can come up with. I can't promise anything though. Darcie: Well, for starters, hello to another Asian on these forums It's nice to meet you. For starters, I'm glad you found these forums. You can definitely come here to talk about subjects that you're confused about with the opposite sex, or your opinion on whether or not guys should have engagement rings (here I cite Jo, David, Locke, Clarissa, wjr1991, Rose...) and other issues that came up while reading FYWO/FYMO I do have to say though, that I don't believe Jo means to make newcomers feel unwelcome or anything of the sort. She's a totally awesome person, and, like wjr1991 was saying, I think you might want to read through the first part of the thread to understand where Jo is coming from before jumping right to (other) conclusions. I'm really not trying to come across as arrogant or anything, but please try to understand that there are some of us that have been on these forums since they pretty much started them- back in 2007 or 2008. Wjr1991 pretty much said it all, and I'm going to back him up: because we have been on these forums for a while, yes we have exchanged info and we keep in touch outside of these forums- so that's where our camaraderie comes from- or our familiarity. So in explanation to this thread started by Jo: yeah, we've been on here for quite a while, and if you check some of the older threads on this forum, you will find rather long and very wise and insightful posts, rather than the 2 or 3 word posts we see now. To us older users, the forums have changed QUITE a bit, and we actually like posting long and insightful posts and discussing confusions we have rather than what color shoes we're wearing. I think Jo just wanted to see what some of us were up to, since she couldn't really ask on one of the threads you guys have now, considering THAT would be rude. I guess that was my long and "quite insightful: post ^_^ Haha! I'll be on a little more often- considering I remember to. I think i'm becoming extinct among the newcomers of the forums ^_^ Haha! |
