Well, I'm not a huge rock fan (thought my fav band is Relient K!) but, my priest for my youth group kinda questions it; if there screaming, then that's just plain weird, but that's my opinion. I don't think it's wrong to listen to it if the lyrics are fine, like skillet, red, etc. But my priest said lyrics can effect you, so he told us to stay away from secular heavy metal. I really think it depends on the persons taste, but personally, I can't see why anyone would want to listen to that stuff anyway. I can't see God liking someone screaming so called "praises" at the top of their lungs with distorted music. They did an experiment with chimps, they put some chimps in a room with classical and one with heavy metal, the chimps in the classical room were calm and grooming each other while the ones in the heavy metal room were trying to kill each other. I just don't think it's healthy for the brain, but hey, that JUST my opinion, and nobody has to listen to it. Like I said, I'm not a rock fan, I listen to Greek music! lol :P

OK. some people might disagee with me, but here's my take on country. Maybe you guys have other country channels than what I'v got. I can't listen to country for more than 5 minites before one of the songs has a sware word in it or it's talking about drinking beer or making out with some girl! Why should I listen to stuff like that if it's somthing I know is wrong.
One of the songs puts it like this----"Things are going to get hotter after the sun goes down"
and----"So after I was done her and I would get in a truck and get tangled up every chance we got". Yeah, that sounds like a great song to be singing. I like country too but it seems every time I turn it on, I'm like oh please can't they just skip that song!
Can anybody relate to this?

someone once put it like this...
"If you play a country song backwards, the dude gets his house back, gets his car back, gets his wife back, and his dog doesn't run away..."

ahem

I think what brought around christian death metal, and similar genre's, was the fact that bogans, or metal heads, won't ever really give up the music they listen to... so it's better to give them a clean alternative...
that being said... I personally dont get why anyone needs to death scream everything... so bands like "the valley" I don't get...

but i'm an oldschool underoath fan, and skillet and mumsdollar and even seven places and manafest have screamo in their songs, and where those parts are, it makes sense with the message of the song. (talking old school underoath, not the newer stuff where I can't even make out words... my friend can, but i can't)

Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances
Let it all out
'Cause you won't regret it
Lookin' back from where you have been
'Cause it's not who you knew
And it's not what you did
It's how you live

I think you need to understand it, not from a personal preference standpoint, but from a "this is how music changes over the years" stand point.

and I dont think you'd feel great if you got to heaven and all the metal heads did have their death circle praise and worship moments...

I mean, people in Bible times probably think all the music we listen to right now, including rock, and techno etc, aren't real music.
Remember, when Larry Norman (one of the founding artists of Christian rock and roll) when he first came about, people thought it was the devil's music... and he went on to write a song called "Why should the devil have ALL the good music?"

I know we dont particularly like that genre, but we cant be discriminatory and say "I dont think they'll have that in heaven" I mean, I used to think that about alot of things and felt so shamed when God humbled me about my oppinions...

Yeah, Greek music is good, especially the instrumental ones like Dance of the Satyrs or Zonaradikos Dance.

I don't want to be pushy, but whats your take on country songs relating to my last post with "iffy" words or/and thems? Should a christan listen to that?

um... i think you can listen to country... but you kinda need to find artists who have morally right lyrics... does that make sense?
like i dont listen to taylor swift, but my friend is like her biggest fan (and yes, she's 20...) and according to her, her lyrics are pretty sound...
Needtobreathe is a great christian band (idk if they're really country... idk they're a few genre's, but Will could tell you more about that cuz he's their biggest fan)
um... Third day has a country sound-ish... mainly to do with the lead singers gravelly country voice :D hehe...

To answer your question specifically, songs like that, listening to them constantly is just gonna put your mind on that wavelength, so i wouldn't listen to it... but i can hardly talk when I like songs like "Crank It Up" by Ashley Tisdale and "TikTok" by ke$ha (however it's spelled, and it's the ONLY song of hers I listen to...) and well crank it up isn't 100% dodgy, but if you;ve heard tiktok, it doesn't scream "role model" haha.
so idk... i guess we shouldn't listen to them...

now kesha, lady gaga, beiber, snoop dog, eminem, rhianna.. ect... are NOT good to listen to. that i will agree with.
Talyor swift is my LEAST favorite country singer. Lady Antebellum is MY FAVORITE!

So what do yall think of taking trash songs and putting good christian lyrics to them????

I've heard someone take "complicated" by Avril Lavigne (spelling...) and change it up... but it was just a fun take on it, wasn't exactly christian...

but yeah, you can, but you gotta deal with copywrites etc... :P

When it comes to the main subject of heavy rock songs, I personally think they're AMAZING!!!!! I'm talking about Christian rock though. Not the kind of rock with an explicit word every 5 seconds. If you give it a chance, Christian rock is really quite good. Take for example the band August Burns Red. There's more rock in them then there is in Mt. Everest! Sure, some of their songs will probably never be played on normal Christian radio, but that doesn't mean they're not good. Here are some of the lyrics from ABR's song The Escape Artist: "How many have you pushed away, and how many have you saved. Pick and choose based on a face, when it's all in the heart." ***Caution*** Contains extremely large amounts of ROCK!!!

You have Air 1 beckah?? that's awesome I listen to it all the time!!!

so yeah, I haven't been on the forums in months and kinda jumping in here. I don't care for rock, but Skillet and even One Republic fall in that category!

Country *ahem* hate it!!! (sorry Grant) I love rap and hip hop and people look at me like you're crazy!!! That music is so bad. Well face it, Country is about mud, huge egos, bear and love affairs, and rap about drugs and one night stands. Is one better than the other? There are a lot of country songs I really do like and have amazing lyrics. I'm playing a bunch at our wedding :D I think Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, and some George Strait are more respectful than the others.

What you listen to DOES affect who you are. I listened to rap and hip hop a lot and always felt this spiritual heaviness over me and found my thought life not very honorable. So I went off it for a few months, maybe listening to a song now and then. I can't even go back now!!! After listening to music that was spiritually uplifting I just feel a darkness come over me when I listen to rap and some country. I don't mean Christian rap/hip hop artists like Toby Mac and lacrea or KJ52 but like Emminem and Rhianna.
