or rub her shoulder

But then you'll be that creepy shoulder rub guy...

Hugging a girl that doesn't want it will do alot less damage that hugging a girl who really needs it and the other person walks away or is too scared to try. Start with the small moves, hold her hair off her face, and risk being the creepy shoulder rub guy!!

I think "shoulder rub" could be a substitute for "shoulder pat," and it would be a little less awkward. But Clare is right =]

I personally love a guy who isn't scared to cry in front of a girl. It shows he's real and secure enough in himself to not think he has to keep up the whole tough guy thing ALL the time. At the same time, though, I don't want a guy who crys everytime someone looks at him wrong. I don't like that in anyone. It makes you come across at somewhat self-centered and emotional. I guess a good summary would be that the crying rules should be the same for guys and girls. Don't be way overly emotional but if you have a real reason go ahead and cry your eyes out.

you don't have to pat or rub her shoulder

just rest your hand on her shoulder - it's like saying "hey i'm here if you need me"
it's kind, not awkward or creepy

but definately keep in mind how a girl normally acts: whether or not she is into hugs

personally, i tell guys i don't hug guys
it makes me uncomfortable
and actually my family is warm and huggy

Mallory, I like your thinking.
